For most visitors the best place to stay in Ulaanbaatar is the city centre, within walking distance of Sükhbaatar Square and Peace Avenue, where museums, restaurants and tour pick-ups are close by. Travellers who prefer quieter, newer surroundings often choose the Zaisan area in the south, and those with an extra night or two can stay in a ger camp in Terelj, outside the city. Accommodation ranges from simple hostels to international hotels; prices and availability change by season, so book directly or through a reliable platform and confirm details with the property.

Best areas to stay in Ulaanbaatar

          • City centre (around Sükhbaatar Square and Peace Avenue): the most convenient base for first-time visitors. Everything is walkable, and taxis and tour operators are easy to reach. Expect more traffic noise.
          • West-central (towards the State Department Store and Gandan Monastery): still central, with good access to Gandan and many guesthouses and mid-range hotels on side streets.
          • Zaisan and Khan-Uul (south): newer apartment towers, malls and some upscale hotels near the foot of Bogd Khan Mountain. Quieter and greener, but you will rely on taxis to reach the centre, and the road between can be congested.
          • Outside the city (Terelj and nearby valleys): ger camps and resorts about an hour or more away by road, good for a first taste of the countryside rather than for sightseeing in the city.

The airport is roughly 50 km from the centre, so staying "near the airport" brings little benefit except before a very early flight.

          Accommodation types by budget

          • Budget: hostels and guesthouses, many in apartment buildings in the centre. Dorm beds and simple private rooms, shared kitchens, and often a tour desk. Check reviews for cleanliness, heating and security.
          • Mid-range: small and medium hotels with private bathrooms, breakfast and an English-speaking front desk. This is the widest category and suits most travellers.
          • Upscale: international chain and leading Mongolian hotels in the centre and Zaisan, with restaurants, gyms and business facilities.
          • Serviced apartments: good for families and longer stays, with a kitchen and washing machine.
          • Ger camps near the city: an introduction to staying in a ger, usually with shared bathrooms and meals included.

          Seasonal things to know

Summer is the busiest period, and the days around the Naadam festival in mid-July fill up early, so book well ahead for that period. In summer, the city carries out scheduled maintenance on its central hot-water network, and some neighbourhoods go without hot water for days at a time; ask whether your hotel has its own water heater. In winter, central heating keeps rooms very warm, but air pollution peaks, and a hotel with good windows and an air purifier makes a real difference.

          Practical tips

          • Confirm whether the price includes breakfast, taxes and airport transfer.
          • Ask for a room away from the street if you are a light sleeper.
          • Check that the building has a lift if you are staying on a high floor in an older apartment block.
          • Foreigners staying longer than 30 days must register with the Immigration Agency of Mongolia within 7 days of arrival, and hosts or accommodation providers must register foreign guests within 48 hours; rules change, so check the current requirements with the Immigration Agency or your embassy.
          • Keep your passport and valuables in the room safe or at reception.
